Dataset description

The Lazio Soil Charter at the scale of 1:250 000, is a summary document on a regional scale, organised according to three hierarchical levels of varying degrees of detail: Pedological Regions (SR — Soil Region), Soil Systems (SS — Soil System) and Soil Sub System (SSS). The soil regions have a reference scale of 1:5.000,000 (European level), soil systems have a reference scale of 1:1.000.000 (national level), soil subsystems have a reference scale of 1:250,000 (regional level). The Subsystems of Soil are 185 to which are added three other cartographic units without soil information: bodies and waterways; other areas without soil and artificially shaped territories. For each Soil Subsystem in legend are reported the main types of soil (STS) indicating their diffusion and classification according to the World Reference Base for Soil Resources 2014, update 2015. In the volume Legenda dei Soli del Lazio, landscapes and soils are described in more detail and for the different types of soil (STS), in addition to abbreviation, diffusion and classification, the main characteristics and qualities, including the class of capacity for use, are reported. The extended legend also indicates minor secondary STS. In the volume Atlas of the Soils of Lazio (Naples R., Paolanti M., Di Ferdinando S. (ed.) (2019) ARSIAL Regione Lazio. ISBN 978-88-904841-2-4.), in Chapter 2, Reading Guide, you can find a detailed illustration of the available data and their organisation. The Atlas also contains a glossary of the terms used. The Lazio Soil Charter (funded by the MiPAAF under the Interregional Programme “Agriculture Quality”) was prepared by ARSIAL (Regional Agency for the Development and Innovation of Agriculture of Lazio) under regional mandate, in collaboration with the Research Centre for Agriculture Environment of CREA (Council for Research in Agriculture and Analysis of the Agricultural Economy).
