Lifestyle: Habit of smoking

Smoking is “the first easily avoidable cause of death.” It is responsible for about 27 % of cancer deaths and 32 % of total deaths in the province. 72 % of cases of cancer in the oral cavity, pharynx and esophagus and 83 % of lung cancers are attributed to smoking. Smoking is also responsible for other diseases, such as myocardial infarction, stroke, chronic obstructive bronchitis and other respiratory disorders. Smoking is widespread in 24.7 % of the provincial population between 18 and 69 years of age (28 % among men and 21.3 % among women).
