Dataset description

The Milazzo sheet includes a part of the eastern escarpment of Sicily, the southern part of the Gioia basin and a part of the southern flank of the island of Panarea. The area of greatest depth is represented by the northern part of the Stromboli Valley, crossed by a meandriform thalweg, into which the canyon of Gioia/Mesima flows as a tributary on the right. The Gioia basin is characterised by the presence of three channels: Villafranca, Niceto and Milazzo. The Milazzo and Niceto canals join the Stromboli Valley. On the contrary, the channel of Villafranca is not connected to the Stromboli Valley and ends in the escarpment, where it gives rise to a depositional lobe. The the western part of the sheet is affected by the warheads of the corresponding canyons that engraving the Sicilian escarpment arrive in some cases up to the coast. In particular in the area of Capo Milazzo, the head of the Niceto canyon reaches close to the piers of the petrochemical plant. In the eastern part of the sheet, the Sicilian escarpment is characterised by a large niche of landslides, extended for about 50 linear km to the edge of the platform, and by a series of niches of complex landslide in retrogressive structure at the top of the escarpment. They extend for 23 linear km and affect the south-western flank of the high of Acquarone, at depths around 1 000 m. There are two critical points linked to landslide niches and canyon heads.
