Dataset description

Foglio 18 includes both the marine areas in front of the Sicilian NE coast between Capo D’Orlando and the Gulf of Patti, and the submerged portions of the volcanic buildings of Vulcano, Lipari, Salina and part of Panarea. The continental margin in front of the Sicilian NE coast is characterised by a rather steep and narrow platform (maximum width of 6 km), whose eyelash is often strongly eroded, being indented by numerous Canyon, whose head goes up to depths of 50 m (or less) and at distances of a few hundred meters from the coast. Canyon warheads are, in turn, made up of a series of detachment niches. with dimensions of a few hundred meters, often arranged in retrogressive order, representing one of the main geological hazards of the area in relation to the possible generation of waves. the canyons follow up to over 1 000 m deep, draining the entire continental escarpment, with an average length of 10 km, width of several hundred meters and depths of several tens of meters. The Aeolian volcanic buildings are characterised in the areas below the coast by the development of narrow island platforms (maximum width of 2 km at the oldest sectors), related to fluctuations eustatic occurred in the Late-Quaternary, whose eyelash is located at depths varying between 90 and 120 m. At greater depths, there is a sharp increase in slopes (with values greater than 30°) and the hips volcanics have an irregular morphology, defined by the alternation of volcanic outcrops and erosive-depositional features. In particular, an extensive conoid with an estimated volume of over 200 million cubic meters develops in the sector in front of Baia di Levante (Vulcano) between 300 and 1 100 m deep. The conoid is fed by a large depressed area, interpreted as the submerged continuation of the Caldera di La Fossa. Four critical points associated with canyon system and canyon warheads were detected. CNR-IGAG
