Dataset description

The area of Foglio 46 is located along the apulian margin of the Gulf of Taranto, in the Northern Ionian Sea, between Porto Cesareo and Marini. The sheet extends for a length of about 26 km in latitude, and about 43 km in longitude. The depth of the seabed varies from about -22 m in the area below the coast, to reach-600 m in the deepest part of the escarpment, near the Taranto Valley. The morphobatimetry of the bottoms in the sheet is relatively uniform; two well-defined physiographic contexts can be recognised: 1) the continental shelf area (140 km²) covers the smaller portion of the acquired area (22 %), but in reality in this seabed area, the Apulian continental shelf extends for about 450 km² and spreads over a length of 50 km from a minimum of 5 km to a maximum of 17 km from the coast line, reaching a depth of about 100 m to the shelf-break; 2) the continental escarpment of the apulous margin covers a large part of the sheet (88 %). The slope is generally little acclimatised (maximum value 1.5°). The escarpment is divided into a first portion of the seabed, with a relatively modest gradient (0.6°) for about 14 km in the proximal portion (up to about 120 m isobata). Later the profile becomes more acclived (1.5°) in the distal portion (from the isobata 120 m to the isobata 300 m). There is 1 critical point that includes phenomena of erosive instability. OGS
