Sheet 54 shows, as a whole, a series of very evident landslide niches that indicate the possibility of incipient breakage towards the retrogressive platform. This type of evidence together with information on area seismicity and tectonic deformation indicate that a large area of the margin is subject to an incipient reactivation of landslides. The landslide niches present in the area, together with the most important niche called “Vieste’s landslide”, affect holocene deposits and are not draped by successive units. The main mechanisms that lead to a general gravitave margin instability are: active tectonics (recent) leading to a local increase in the slope of the margin, the widespread erosion due to the background currents, horizons of weakness recurrent at several levels within the sedimentary succession and intense seismicity diffused.
