Magic Foglio 68 Alghero — Map (OpenData)

The sheet is located in the Sardinian Sea and is located on the central-western edge of Sardinia between Capo Mannu and Torre di Poglina, whose formation follows the geodynamic evolution of the western Mediterranean that took place in the Tertiary. The Alghero sheet falls for 70 % in platform areas and for the remaining part in escaping areas. The deep areas beyond the 700 m bathymeter were only partially investigated. The platform areas are characterised by extensive outcrops of lithoid sub-layer whose structuring controls the width of the platform itself, which varies between 38 and 12 km. The platform is externally limited by a slope break to about 270 m depth which corresponds to the pleistocene prograding wedge, juxtaposed to the Pliocene prism and the basement. The upper escarpment develops with mild gradient west of Alghero, while it deepens abruptly at the head of the canyons west of Capo Cristallo and Punta dell’Argentiera. The seismic stratigraphy of the background and the mild seismic activity of the margin outline a picture of relative stability along this stretch of coast. There are 3 critical points related to two pockmarks and a canyon. The scientific body responsible for the sheet is the CNR-IAMC.
