Dataset description

Sheet 71 is located in the Sardinian Sea, located on the northern edge of Sardinia in front of the Gulf dell’Asinara and includes the stretch of coast between Castelsardo and Portobeli. The dominant morphobatimetric element is the Castelsardo canyon that divides the continental shelf into two distinct sectors. To the west of the canyon, the platform has a width of about 20 km, limited to the escarpment by a net slope break, around 150 m deep. To the east of the canyon the platform is not bounded by a clear slope break, but it regularly degrades towards the sides of the Castelsardo canyon to the west and its tributary to the north. The Castelsardo canyon has an indentation on the platform of about 13 km, with a single ribbon head, located about 3 km from the coast with a minimum depth of about 100 m. Inside the canyon, on both sides, are there are intrachannel terraces that separate the upper part, less leaning and with sweeter morphologies, from the deeper part that presents fresh morphologies, engraved by numerous secondary channels and landslide niches. Towards the north the canyon has a meandriform trend up to the confluence with the right tributary. The branch coming from the right is characterised by a similar style, with numerous transversal channels to the main course, and internal landslide niches. The headboard is buried with consequent softening of the morphologies. However, they are recognizable inside more recent engravings that have remobilised sediment within some side channels and thalweg of the main branch. Points There are two critical points related to a canyon warhead and a landslide. The scientific body responsible for the sheet is the CNR-IAMC.
