Dataset description

Sheet 35 includes the Ionic margin between Mélito di Porto Salvo and Capo Bruzzano. The coastal stretch between Capo Spartivento and the western edge of the Foglio is on average oriented E-O with a marked recess on the margin in front of Bova Marina and Mèlito. The continental margin area included in Sheet 35 has particularly lively morphodynamic features (tested canyons with a marked retrogressive evolution and unstable masses of considerable size and a particular interest related to the effects of resurfaced fluids. From a physiographic point of view, the area comprises two distinct sectors. In correspondence and N of Capo Spartivento extends an unusually wide platform for the ionic margin, only occasionally affected by the warheads of small channels at short run. To the west of Capo Spartivento the platform narrows until it is practically reduced to a few residual strips intermediate between very active canyon warheads, which come to affect the coastal domain. These flaps are in turn attacked by warheads of minor canyons, so that the platform of this stretch, once much more extensive, is progressively demolished by retrogressive erosion. While in the western part the upper escarpment is therefore entirely occupied by the headboards and steeper sections of the canyons and canals, the remaining area is characterised by a few thin channels and a chaotic detail morphology, caused by widespread gravitative failures that partially obliterate the channels themselves, limiting them to reduced bathymetries. There are 8 critical points that include canyon and canal warheads, platform sectors, rocky outcrops and gas surges. CoNISMa-UnitriESTE
