Dataset description

The area falling under Foglio 41 corresponds to the southern portion of the Gulf of Taranto of Ionian Calabria, between Capo Spulico in the north and Capo Trionto in the south. In the area there is a very narrow continental shelf (not more than 3 km) and low slope and a very articulated continental escarpment. The latter is divided into two large basins, Corigliano to the south and Amendolara to the north, separated by the high structural of the Amendolara, oriented ca. NO-SE and bounded by tectonic features. The backbone of the Amendolara has a bumpy morphology, as it is dissected by NE-SO tectonic features form structural ups and downs. The depth of the bottom of the ridge is very variable, from -30 to -350 m approx. The slopes of the ridge are in general very acclivious and often affected by simple and complex landslides that, especially on the NE margin of the ridge, are of considerable size. The Corigliano Basin is characterised by a little inclined continental escarpment, whose margin is affected by creeping phenomena, small erosion channels with a V profile and numerous erosive channels, more or less straight and with heads very close to the coast line. Finally, in the NO part of Sheet 41 falls the southern portion of the Amendolara basin, also characterised by the presence of mass gravitative deposits both buried and outcropping. There is 1 critical point that includes channel warheads. OGS
