Magic Sheet 42 Metaponto — Map (OpenData)

Sheet 42 is located in the Gulf of Taranto, a marine sector located between the local crops of the southern Apennines to the west and the area of the Murge to the east, representing the southern extension of the plio-pleistocene vanfossa (bradanic vanfossa) of the chain. The sheet is characterised by physiographic domains that develop in a very particular and complex geological context, as it covers the connecting area between the emerged sector and the still submerged one of the Catena-Avanfossa-Avampaese system of the Southern Apennines. The area of study is characterised by: in the north-eastern sector by a stretch of escarpment that presents very articulate morphological evidence typical of areas with a widespread gravitative instability; in the north-western sector by a narrow continental shelf along which there is the Canyon Head of the Valley of Taranto and in the southern sector by a continental shelf that extends between the mouth of the river Agri to the north and the lower edge of the paper field.
