Dataset description

The area of Foglio 44 is located on the apulian margin of the northern Ionian sea, and extends for a length of about 35 km (in latitude) for 55 km (in longitude) between Torretta and Torre Colimena. The depth of the seabed in this portion of margin varies from about 30 m in the area below the coast to NE of the sheet, up to 1 800 m in the deepest part of the escarpment and in the valley of Taranto. Three distinct physiographic contexts can be recognised: 1) The continental shelf, which covers a small portion of the sheet although in this area extends for about 15 km and reaches a depth of about 100 m (shelf-break); 2) The continental escarpment of the apulous margin, which covers most of the sheet. The slope is generally rather steep (maximum value 3.6°). The escarpment is divided into a first portion of the seabed with a relatively modest gradient (0.6°) in the proximal portion (up to about 400 m isobata), then it becomes acclived (3.6°) in the central portion (from the isobata 400 m to the isobata 1 000 m) to reach 1.3° of slope in the distal portion of the escarpment; 3) The valley of Taranto, elongated depression with NO-SE direction that separates the Calabrian margin from the apulous margin and represents the submerged continuation of the bradanic pit. There are 8 critical points that include erosive escarpments, escarpments and landslide niches, canyon heads. OGS
