Dataset description

The sheet is located in the central part of the Tyrrhenian Sea, in the central-northern sector of the eastern margin of Sardinia and includes a stretch that extends from Posada to Cala Gonone. The area included in the sheet is located in the Baronie Basin, an intra-scarped basin located in the central-northern sector of the eastern margin of Sardinia. The area covers the continental shelf of the Baronie basin, which has a maximum width of 14 km in the northern section of the sheet, where it is identified by the southern branch of the Posada tax canyon system. The platform is tapered southwards to reach values below the km in correspondence of the canyon heads of the Gonone-Orosei system, in the Gulf of Orosei. The Gonone-Orosei system represents the main underwater drainage system of the eastern Sardinian margin, and is characterised by imposing canyons whose heads, in the case of the Gonone canyon, reach practically the current coastal area in front of Cala Gonone. In the sheet the Gonone canyon has a length of about 40 km and reaches depths of over 1 500 m. In the platform sectors included among the heads of the Gonone-Orosei canyons there are morphologies attributable to coastal cords and fossil deltizi systems. Among the warheads of the Gonone and Orosei canyon there is also a submerged and extinct volcanic apparatus. There are 2 points of criticality (testate of canyons). CNR-ISMAR
