Dataset description

In the Latium Land Use Capacity Charter on the 1:250 000 scale, soils are grouped according to their ability to produce agricultural crops, fodder or timber without degradation, i.e. to maintain their level of quality. The Land Capability Classification (LCC) classifies eight classes, sorted by increasing levels of limitations and indicated using the symbology of Roman numerals. Classes I to IV include soils which are considered suitable for farming. Classes V to VII include soils considered unsuitable for agriculture (due to limitations or conservation needs of the soil resource), but where forestry or grazing is possible. 8th class soils may only be used for conservative purposes. In cartography, for each polygon, one prevailing class and a secondary class are represented. For example, if the legend mentions IV — III, it is intended to indicate that the soils of the fourth class of capacity for use of the soils are the predominant ones and those of III the secondary ones. The coverage degree of each class is also indicated (>75 %; 50 %-75 %; 25-50 %; 10 %-25 %) In cases where the prevailing class affects more than 75 % of the polygon surface area, the secondary class is not indicated. For more details, please refer to the volumes Legenda and Atlas of the Soils of Lazio (Naples R., Paolanti M., Di Ferdinando S. (ed.) (2019) ARSIAL Regione Lazio. ISBN 978-88-904841-2-4.) where landscapes and soils are described and for the different soil types (STS typological subunits), in addition to abbreviation, diffusion and classification, the main characteristics and qualities, including the class of capacity for use, are also reported. In the same volume in Chapter 2, Reading Guide, you can find a detailed illustration of the available data and their organisation. The Atlas also contains a glossary of the terms used. The Charter of the Capacity for Use of Lazio Soils (funded by the MiPAAF under the Interregional Programme “Agriculture Quality”) was prepared by ARSIAL (Regional Agency for the Development and Innovation of Agriculture of Lazio) under regional mandate, in collaboration with the Research Centre for Agriculture Environment of CREA (Council for Research in Agriculture and Analysis of the Agricultural Economy).
