Dataset description

The database returns the events of the presence of the Marsican brown bear in the regional territory in the form of a grid of 2 km x 2 km. The events of presence are defined on the basis of the signs of presence detected and then validated by the contact persons of the Regional Monitoring Network of the Marsican Brown Bear according to the standards set out in the technical document “Criteria for the planning of the monitoring of the presence of the Marsican brown bear in peripheral areas of the distribution area in the Lazio Region”. The database also integrates the data of the presence events collected, validated and shared by the National Park of Abruzzo, Lazio and Molise (in the Lazio Park) with which the Monitoring Network of the Lazio Region operates in synergy. Attendance events span a time span from the 1990s to 2020. The grid does not represent the distribution of the population on the regional territory but the events of presence documented and validated to date. The presence events integrated with the cartography of distribution models and environmental idoenity for the species (downloadable from the website of the Ministry of the Environment and the Protection of Land and Sea at http://www.minambiente.it/pagina/piano-dazione-la-tutela-dellorso-marsicano-patom) are an indispensable information layer for the territorial management aimed at the conservation of the Marsican Brown Bear population. In 2015-2017, the Association Salviamo l’Orso collaborated to the activities of the Regional Monitoring Network of the Marsican brown bear. Starting in 2017, the Lazio Monitoring Network works in synergy with the corresponding Abruzzo-Molise Monitoring Network through joint monitoring programmes in the Simbruini-Ernici Mountains.
