Pai Sicilia — Physiographic unit n°1- Capo Milazzo — Capo Peloro (001)

This coastal unit, located in the north-eastern part of Sicily between Capo Milazzo to the west and Capo Peloro to the east, falls entirely in the province of Messina. The coast, which develops for a total length of about 49 km, has 80 % low coasts (about 73 % of which consists of sand mixed with pebbles and 27 % sand) and 20 % high rocky coasts. From an administrative point of view, the physiographic unit 1 comprises a total of 13 municipalities all falling in the province of Messina, (Milazzo, S. Filippo Mela, Pace del Mela, S. Pier Niceto, Monforte S. Giorgio, Torregrotta, Valdina, Venetico, Spadafora, Rometta, Saponara, Villafranca Tyrrhenian, Messina).The exploitation of the territory and mainly industrial and urban, although the area of Capo Peloro is considered rural. This stretch of coast, which extends in a north-south direction at the Milazzo peninsula, proceeding eastwards tends to orient itself mainly in an east-west direction up to Capo Peloro. In relation to the coastal configuration, the storms are mainly linked to the winds coming from the I and IV quadrants, namely Grecale, Tramontana and Maestrale. The most intense and frequent wave motions are generally those related to the mistral wind (from the north-west), so the net coastal drift of the sediments and towards the east.
