Project domain LIFE AQUOR (LIFE10/ENV/IT/000380)

The LIFE AQUOR project (LIFE10/ENV/IT/380), with a work programme carried out from September 2011 to April 2015, has been conceived as a demonstration action to encourage the reversal of the current trend of overexploitation of groundwater resources and to increase the rate of hydrogeological recharge of aquifers, with the aim of rebalancing the groundwater of the Upper Vicentina Plain (Veneto Region) and to ensure its sustainable use by current and future generations. The initiative is based on the active involvement of stakeholders and aims to consolidate a shared commitment to the quantitative protection of one of Europe’s most important underground water assets. The dataset indicates the area of interest of the project where the structural actions dedicated to the reloading of the groundwater are concentrated. The domain is located in the central area of the Veneto Region: it is bounded to the north by the slopes of the Vicentine Prealps, to the west by the southern slopes of the Lessini mountains, to the south by the Risorgian belt and to the east cut out the municipalities of Bassano del Grappa, Rosà and Tezze sul Brenta. Here you will find one of the most important bodies of the river basin district of the Eastern Alps, due to environmental conformation and by catchment area. The aquifers of this area constitute the source of water supply for most of the territory of the Province of Vicenza and contribute to feeding the aqueducts network of much of the Province of Padua (already since 1860), for a total of about 400,000 inhabitants. Moreover, this considerable availability of water has allowed the development of numerous industrial activities, which require high volumes of water in their production cycle, and the simultaneous increase of activities related to the agricultural sector, closely linked to the supply of water for irrigation purposes.
