The data set is covered by a data liability agreement with the Danish Environmental Portal. The designation has been implemented in Danish legislation by Order No 408 of 1 May 2007 on the designation and administration of international nature conservation areas as well as the protection of certain species, as amended. A Ramsar area is one of three types of international nature conservation areas: Community bird protection areas, Community habitat areas and Ramsar areas. The former two are collectively referred to as Natura 2000 sites. Ramsar areas are protected wetlands of particular importance for birds. Ramsar areas have been designated on the basis of the “Convention of 2 February 1971 on wetlands of international importance in particular as a habitat for waterbirds” — also called the “Ramsar Convention” after the city of Iran where the Convention was established. Denmark subsequently approved the Amending Protocol to the Convention of 3 December 1982 and the amendment of the Convention of 3 June 1987. Denmark has designated 27 Ramsar areas with a total area of approximately 7.400 km². The total area is distributed with approximately 6.000 km² as marine areas and approximately 1.400 km² on land, as the Danish Ramsar areas often include marsh meadows or other areas bordering the wetlands.
