Dataset description

This new version of the Historical Land Use database also contains the seven new municipalities of Valmarecchia. At the end of the 90s, a collaboration between the Institute for Artistic, Cultural and Natural Heritage and the Geographical Information Systems Service of the Emilia-Romagna Region allowed the construction of a historical-regional cartography derived from pre-unitary productions from 1828 to 1853. The regional territory is covered by the Austrian Topographic Map (scale 1:86,400) and, for a small portion, by the Topographic Map of the mainland States of His Majesty the King of Sardinia of 1853 (scale 1:50,000). The so-called Austrian Topographic Chart is actually composed of several maps made on several occasions, according to the natural and progressive commitment of the Imperial Royal Austrian Army Military Engineer to map the Italian territories subject to or controlled by the government of Vienna. The mosaic of the various cartography was scanned at 1016 points per inch, georeferenced through the recognition of trigonometric points and known points, finally divided according to the cutting of the modern sheets 1:50,000 of the Istituto Geografico Militare. The legends of the various cards are quite similar and comparable to each other. The strong detail of these topographic maps allowed an interpretation of the conventional signs, in order to build a database of “historical” land use, with a legend built on three levels of the Corine Land Cover type. This legend has been drawn up with a criterion of maximum possible similarity to that of the other regional editions of Soil Use, in order to make the products comparable to each other and to allow reconstructions of the variations of the government of the territory over a span of 150 years.
