Dataset description

The number of private households per municipality and the type of household as of 1 February 2011 is calculated by STATEC. The delimitation of municipalities is that observed on 1 February 2011, the date of the last general population census. A private household can be: (1) a household of isolated, that is, a person living alone in a separate housing unit or occupying, as a subtenant, one or more rooms of a housing unit, but who does not form a multiple household with other occupants of the unit; (2) a multiple household, i.e. a group of two or more persons who join forces to occupy a housing unit, in whole or in part, and provide in common with their food and/or other basic needs of existence. The members of this group may, to a varying extent, pool their incomes. The group may consist only of persons related to each other, unrelated persons or persons belonging to either of those two categories; it may include boarders but not subtenants. Persons temporarily absent at the time of the census are considered to be part of the household. Domestic servants, employees and workers living with their employer are part of the employer’s household; however, if they return to their household at least weekly, they are only part of the household. A private household is either a non-family household (without family ties between the different persons) or family (at least two persons with kinship ties). Non-family households are defined as one-person households, i.e. people living alone and multiple households, i.e. a group of two or more people who occupy the same housing and provide, for example, their food needs in common. In the case of family households, a distinction must be made between single-family and multi-family households, the former containing only one family nucleus. Multi-family households are formed either by several family nuclei or by a family nucleus plus persons belonging to the family household without being a member of a family nucleus within that household. Family nucleus means either a couple with or without a child, or a single parent with at least one child. The concept of family nucleus is limited to relations between parents and children.
