Zoning of the South Region as part of the MAB application In UNESCO’s biosphere reserves, areas play a key role. Particular attention has therefore been paid to the definition and delimitation of these areas. ‘Biosphere reserves have three interdependent zones designed to fulfil three interrelated functions, which are complementary and mutually reinforcing: The central area(s) includes (includes) a strictly protected ecosystem that contributes to the conservation of landscapes, ecosystems, species and genetic variation. The buffer zone surrounds or borders central areas and is used for activities consistent with environmentally sustainable practices that can enhance scientific research, monitoring, training and education. The transition zone is the part of the reserve where more activities are allowed, allowing for socio-cultural and ecologically sustainable economic and human development. “
