Dataset description

The table provides insight into the average number of years insured and the average accrual rate for the General Old Age Act (AOW) of residents of the Netherlands during the accrual phase for the AOW pension, at the end of the reporting year. The total insured period of a person is determined by the period during which he or she was insured during the previous 50 years at the pensionable age according to the AOW. As of 2013, the AOW age is 67 years old, with a transitional arrangement for persons born in the period 1946-1954. Persons from 1946 and 1947 retain their rights; for the birth cohort 1948-1954, retirement and starting age shift by one month to two years. The data shall be broken down according to the following characteristics: — gender; — age; — marital status; — migration background. As of 2013, the filling in the table for 15- and 16-year-olds is empty, they only effectively build up AOW rights from the age of seventeen. The increase in the AOW age and the corresponding starting age for building insured years is in some cases beneficial for migrants. Because many migrants were in their twenties when entering the Netherlands, they suffer less from the lost insured years as 15- and 16-year-olds. As a result, their average build-up rate increases among the migration groups Turkey, Morocco, Suriname, (former) Dutch Antilles and Aruba, and other non-Western people. Data is available from: 2004 Status of the figures: All the figures in the table are final. Changes as of 20 April 2022: There is a link to the new table. When are new figures coming? The current table is no longer updated. As of 13 April, a new table has been replaced: Accrued AOW rights; gender, age and marital status
