Dataset description

The purpose of this publication is to provide numerical insight into the Dutch government archives covered by the Archives Act 1995 and managed by archive services or secretaries of municipalities or water boards. The publication gives a description of the size and nature of these archives, their use (including visitor numbers), accessibility, state of maintenance, staff composition and the finances of archival services. Archives are distinguished in dynamic archives and static archives. Dynamic archives are recent archives that are available be for regular consultation. These archives are usually ‘at your fingertips’ of the users and outside the legal archives— repositories. As such, they remain outside of this statistic. Static archives keep archival records under the Archives Act and after a period of 10 years from the (government) bodies where they were created to be transferred to archives. This suggests the archives are available at the end of a certain period for historical, genealogical or other research. The Archives Act regulates the management of government archives, including the deadline after which documents must be entered into a government archive transferred. The 1962 Archives Act and the 1968 Archives Decree were in 1995. replaced by the Archives Act 1995 and the Archives Decree 1995. In addition, is the statutory period for shipment with effect from 1 January 1996 changed from 50 years to 20 years. The government archives are the archives of the Empire, provinces, municipalities, water boards and other public bodies. These archives are in principle static archives: they contain archival documents that according to the The Archives Act must be preserved. The Archives Act speaks of archival documents; in this statistic, use the term archival documents. Data available from: 1980 Frequency: discontinued
