Dataset description

A burial mound is a hill, raised with paddles, grass soles or clay shells, above the grave of a deceased person. The construction of such monuments has a long tradition, from the late-neolithic (approx. 2900 BC) to Roman times. The database ‘grave hills’ contains about 3000 hills. These are mostly surveyed hill bodies, located on sites that are legally protected. The map offers a dynamic image, as new burial mounds are regularly discovered. In particular, the study of the Current Altitude File Netherlands yields unknown hills in the landscape. Whether it is earthen hills that have been erected (and not pollen hills) can be identified by means of a field test.
