Dataset description

This table describes the capacity of the penitentiary establishments on 30 September, expressed as ‘cells’, classified to the destination (type) of the device in which the cell is located. This purpose of the establishment may be: houses of detention, special establishments, prisons/closed establishments, prisons/semi-open establishments, prisons/open establishments, combined establishments and penitentiary establishments for women. A combined design is a combination of, for example, house of detention and prison. A special establishment is an establishment with a specific function such as the Pieter Baan Centrum. The table with this classification is closed. Data are available for the period 1994-2003. Reason for termination: The classification of the cell capacity by type of device no longer satisfactorily, as a result of ever-increasing clustering of establishments (almost) all penitentiary establishments can be considered as a “combined establishment”. For figures on the capacity of penitentiary establishments (period 1999 and later), expressed in number of ‘places’, broken down by destination of the cell in which the location is located and distinguished to the destination per sex, see: Cel capacity to destination
