Dataset description

This table provides figures on the underlying causes of death of deceased residents of the Netherlands. The figures are broken down by quarter and year of death by a limited number of causes of death. The death of COVID-19 or the disease caused by the novel coronavirus is encoded using the ICD-10 codes U07.1 or U07.2. These codes have been identified by the World Health Organisation (WHO) as “emergency codes” or temporary emergency codes and will be later included in a chapter of the ICD10. These codes are therefore now added to the category “Other causes of death” in the quarterly table. The CBS moved to the use of international software for automatic encoding of causes of death in the 2013 statistical year. This makes the figures more reproducible and internationally comparable. However, there are some significant shifts in the causes of death (see paragraph 4). Data available from: 1th quarter 1996 Status of the figures: The figures for 2020 and 2021 are provisional, while the remaining figures are definitive. Amendments as of 4 November 2021 The figures for the second quarter of 2021 have been added. When will there be new figures? Preliminary figures for the third quarter of 2021 are published in the first quarter of 2022.
