Dataset description

This table contains figures on deaths caused by suicides, as far as residents of the Netherlands were concerned. The figures are broken down by marital status, method of suicide, motive of suicide, age and gender. The figures in this table correspond to those from the cause of death statistics, because they are based on the same source files. However, there is no data on motive for suicide in the causes of death. This data was taken from a historical suicide file for the period 1950-1995. For the period 1996-present, the motive is taken from the Non-Natural Death file. In ICD 6 to ICD 8, used in the 1950s-1978, it was not possible to encode ‘jumping for train/metro’. For the years 1950-1978, therefore, ‘jumping for train/metro’ is not filled, but the deceased are housed in the group ‘Other methods’. The relative figures are calculated per 100 000 of the corresponding population. The figures are calculated on the average population of the year in question. In the 2013 statistical year, the CBS switched to the use of international software for automatic encoding of the causes of death (Iris). This makes the figures more reproducible and internationally comparable. However, there are some significant shifts in the causes of death. However, external causes of death have been processed manually as before. Data available from: 1950 Status of the figures: The figures up to 2020 are final. Changes as of 24 January 2022: The 2020 figures have been finalised. When will there be new figures? Provisional figures for 2021 are published in the third quarter of 2022.
