Dataset description

Water boards are mainly involved in water quality and water quantity management. The costs arising from water quality management (such as the operation of wastewater treatment plants) are considered as environmental costs. Water quantity management focuses mainly on safety (preventing floods and flooding) and therefore the associated costs are not included in the environmental costs. The environmental costs statistics of water boards provide data on the burdens arising from the different task fields within water quality management: — Planning; — Management of surface water; — Control of discharges; — Purification management; — Lifting and reclaiming. In 1999, water quality management was delegated by all provinces, except Groningen, to water boards. Since the year 2000, water quality management has also been transferred to water boards in this province. This means that the environmental costs for water quality management in the province of Groningen are not included in the 1999 figures. The data are presented for total Netherlands and per sub-basin area. The latter was created in collaboration of the National Institute for Integrated Freshwater Management and Wastewater Treatment (RIZA). The research for 2002 was carried out on behalf of the RIZA. Data available from 1999 to 2007. Status of the figures: The figures in this table are final. Changes as of 23 September 2013 The data for the Eems and Rhine East sub-basins were incorrect for the year 2007. This has now been corrected. This table has been discontinued. When are new figures coming? No longer applicable.
