Dataset description

What do you see? The map shows the potential and current habitat of the hamster (Cricetus cricetus) and the size and genetic structure of a number of hamster populations in the Netherlands. The hamster only occurs in the Netherlands in Limburg. What’s the value? Understanding the genetic structure of the population is important for the management of the species and of areas. Genetically, the population is severely impoverished. In a breeding program, the genetic structure is therefore enriched with some hamsters from neighbouring countries. There is still some genetic substructure between the different subpopulations at the moment, but it gradually disappears due to relocations and mutual exchanges. Who is this important to? Nature managers, agricultural nature managers, Provinces (policy)
