Dataset description

This table gives an overview of public expenditure on regular education in the Netherlands from 1900 onwards. The figures presented are calculated according to the OECD’s standardised definitions. The government’s expenditure consists of the expenditure of the national government, provinces and municipalities to educational institutions and education. The government finances the educational institutions and pays for research that they have carried out by universities. The government provides study funding, school allowance, a fee for educational facilities for young people and childcare allowance to households (students and/or parents) and grants grants to companies and non-profit institutions. Total public expenditure is split into expenditure on educational institutions and education, and public expenditure on study allowances for households. Where applicable, these topics shall be further broken down by the education sectors of pre-primary and primary education, special (primary) education, secondary education, secondary vocational education and adult education, higher vocational education and scientific education. The data is available from 1900. The data for the period 1 940 to 1945, at the time of World War II, are rough estimates as there are no sources for those years. The table also contains the indicator Public expenditure on education as a percentage of gross domestic product (GDP). This indicator is used to compare public spending on education internationally. The indicator is compiled on the basis of provisions and definitions of the OECD (Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development). The indicator is also shown in the StatLine Table Education; expenditure on education and CBS/OECD indicators. During the period 1914 to 1920, during World War I, and from 1 940 to 1945, during World War II, government expenditure as a percentage of GDP is not available. Reliable data on GDP is lacking for these periods. Statistics on education expenditure are compiled on a cash basis. This means that education expenditure and revenues are allocated to the year in which they are actually spent or received. However, the activity or transaction associated with the expense or receipt may take place in another year. In June 2018, CBS published the revised National Accounts for the period 1995 to the present day. Among other things, GDP and total government expenditure have been revised upwards as a result of the revision. The revision will not be reversed for the years prior to 1995. The indicator ‘Government expenditure as % of GDP’ shows a break between 1994 and 1995 as a result of the revision. Data available from: 1900 Status of the figures The figures from 1900 to 2019 are final, the figures for 2020 are provisional. Changes as of 28 December 2021: The preliminary figures for 2020 are included. The figures for 2019 are now final. When are new figures coming? The new figures will be available from December 2022.
