Dataset description

This table provides data on expenditure by policy area of the general government sector. For the classification of policy areas, the Classification of the Functions of Government (COFOG 99) is used. The terms used are in line with the National Accounts. The National Accounts are based on the international definitions of the European System of Accounts (ESA 2010). To increase the accessibility of the table, in some cases more common descriptions are used instead of the terms from the National Accounts. The relevant National Accounts term is then mentioned in the notes. The data presented corresponds to the tables on the National Accounts. The data in this table have been consolidated, i.e. the elimination of flows between them. As a result, the expenditure of the subsectors does not add up to the total expenditure of the general government. Payments from, for example, the empire to the municipalities are part of the government’s expenditure and the income of municipalities. They do not count for the expenditure and revenue of the general government, because they are payments from the government to the government. Data available from 1995 to 2016. Status of the figures: The most recent reporting year 2016 has provisional status, the reporting years 2015 and earlier are final. As this table has been discontinued, the data will no longer be definitive. Changes as of 20 December 2018: None, this table has been discontinued. When are new figures coming? Not applicable. This table is followed by public expenditure and expenditure; functions, transactions, public sectors. See paragraph 3.
