Dataset description

File with historic towpaths and towpaths. These roads were originally intended to continue inland waterway vessels. In the beginning by manpower, later by migratory animals. The system of canals and channeled waterways with tow paths on the crown of the dike was fully developed in the 17th and 18th centuries. The difference between a towpath and a towing path lies in the width of the transverse profile of the passable part along the waterway. Along the paths there are still roller posts in some places to pull a ship through a bend or out of the mouth of a port (Haulerwijk, Stavoren).
