Provincial States of North Brabant have the obligation under the Water Framework Directive and the Groundwater Directive to protect groundwater that is now and for the future suitable for the extraction of drinking water. The unconventional extraction of hydrocarbons poses risks that threaten the quality of groundwater for drinking water extraction.
