Dataset description

This table provides information on the annual number of refugees invited by the Netherlands. People who have been living in refugee camps for years and cannot return to their country of origin are eligible. Invited refugees are selected by the IND on a proposal from the United Nations Refugee Organisation (UNHCR). The refugees come to the Netherlands as part of the UNHCR resettlement programme and are therefore referred to as resettlers. Invited refugees are entitled to a residence permit and do not have to go through the Dutch asylum procedure. That is why they are not included in the figures on asylum applications. Since the EU-Turkey statement of 18 March 2016, the number of invited refugees has increased. This statement states that for every Syrian who is sent back from Greece to Turkey, another Syrian will be included in the EU from Turkey. As soon as more than twenty-five refugees of a nationality are invited in one year, this nationality will be listed separately in the table. Data available from: 2008 Status of the figures: The figures in this table are final figures with the exception of the year 2021. However, it happens occasionally that figures are revised later, as new information becomes available. If this is the case, this new information will be taken into account by CBS. Changes as of April 2022: The preliminary figures for the year 2021 have been added. When are new figures coming? The 2022 figures will be available in April 2023.
