Dataset description

This table contains data on the length of the Dutch road network according to manager, road type and municipalities. Data available from: 2001. Status of the figures: It’s definitely. Changes as of April 2022: the 2021 figures have been added. CBS uses the National Road Database (NWB) as a source file. The NWB, in cooperation with the municipalities, the provinces and Rijkswaterstaat, is implementing an improvement effort. For this year, CBS finds differences with previous years in the NWB which are also reflected in the figures. These differences are explained by the correction of previously unclassified roads to cycle paths. The cycle paths are not included in the longitudinal calculation of the motorways, which is why we see a decrease in the length of the motorways this year. Changes as of December 2020: CBS uses the National Road Database (NWB) as a source file. The NWB, in cooperation with the municipalities, is implementing an improvement effort. These improvements have little effect on the figures, there is no trend break. Changes as of August 2020: The structure of this table has been changed. The topics Municipal and Waterways, Provincial Roads and Rijkswegen have been moved from the subjects to the selections. In addition, the figures for the year 2019 have been added and the figures for 2018 have been revised. Due to the use of new software in the calculation of the road length figures (applied for the 2018 and later reference years), there is a limited trend breach between 2017 and 2018. The new software assigns all roads spatially to the municipality in which these roads are located. The old method (applied for the years 2017 and earlier) attributed roads to the municipality as laid down administratively in the source file NWB used. In addition, the new software uses an improved method for excluding cycle paths and footpaths. These are now excluded on the basis of a spatial selection from the source file Top10NL (and no longer on the basis of an administrative couple file derived from the Top10NL). The totals presented are (for all the years) the sum of the parts presented. These totals do not include ‘other’ roads such as privately managed roads. The figures presented are (for all the years) excluding cycle paths and footpaths. As of the reference year 2009, the published figures for the municipality of Baarle-Nassau (and the upper-municipal regions that include this municipality) include the adjacent roads that form part of the Belgian enclave of Baarle-Hertog. When will there be new figures: In the fourth quarter of 2022, the figures for the year 2022 will be published.
