Dataset description

This table shows the number of medical professionals (qualified healthcare professionals registered in the BIG register), their region of residence and socio-economic category in a reporting year. The socio-economic category is based on the main source of income in the month of the reference point. The medical professionals are divided into a number of professions, including the specialisations per profession, using the BIG register. The figures are broken down by age and gender. Medical graduates whose employment status is unknown or who are known not to live or work in the Netherlands at the reference date are listed as separate groups in the table. By adding these groups, the population of medical-skilled persons is in line with the number of medical graduates from the BIG register itself. Medical professionals can have multiple powers. As a result, the sum of the detail data may differ from the total. In 2014, there is a sharp decrease in the number of registered nurses, midwives and physiotherapists in the BIG register. This is due to mandatory re-registration and stricter work experience requirements. In 2017, there is a decrease in the number of registered dentists, pharmacists, health care psychologists and psychotherapists due to mandatory re-registration. In 2018, there is a decrease in basic doctors due to mandatory re-registration. In 2019, the number of registered nurses, midwives and physiotherapists again decreased as a result of the 5 annual re-registration introduced in 2014. Data available from: 2013 Status of the figures: The figures in this table are final, with the exception of the most recent year; these are for now. The reference point used in a reporting year is the last Friday before Christmas. Changes as of 19 March 2021: Figures for reporting year 2019 have been added and reporting year 2018 has been finalised. When will there be new figures? Figures for reporting year 2020 will be added in Q1 2022 and 2019 will become final.
