Motor vehicles; from 1927

This table contains figures from 1927 (date of 1 January) on the number of motor vehicles with a valid Dutch registration number. This includes data on passenger cars, motorcycles and commercial motor vehicles (vans, lorries, semi-trailer tractors, special vehicles and buses), excluding mopeds. The figures are based on the registration number of the RDW (Rijksdienst for Road Traffic). With the help of this registration registration, counts were made of all vehicles with current registration plates that appeared in the registration file on the reference date of the year in question (1 January or 1 August). Over the years, the registration of vehicles has undergone a number of important changes. Before 1995, the reference date for the motor vehicle fleet was 1 August of the year in question, and from 1995 the reference date is 1 January. Other differences in registration have arisen because before 1995 there were more limited possibilities to remove vehicles that have been removed (e.g. demolished or exported vehicles) from the stock. Since 1995, amendments to various legal frameworks have made registration in this area ‘pure’. For example, since 1995 the registration of the ownership tax of motor vehicles has been improved, inter alia by abolishing Part 3 of the registration certificate. On the basis of this registration, the distinction between active vehicles (with valid registration number) and inactive vehicles (without a valid registration number) can be corrected. From 1995 onwards, the series continued with only vehicles with a valid registration number (i.e. excluding vehicles that have been demolished, exported, excluded from registration or belonging to the stock). In order to accommodate the changes in the registration methodology, the current historical series of changes have been made to previously published data. In interpreting this series, both comparisons between figures and comparisons with detailed information from the individual annual publications of the past should take into account the above adjustments.
