Potential capture of fine dust (PM10) by vegetation

What do you see? The map shows the potential capture capacity of vegetation for particulate matter (PM10). What’s the value? Green vegetation (especially rising vegetation, through which air can flow) can capture fine dust. Because particulate matter is a national (and European) problem due to its health-threatening effect, there seem to be opportunities for green to contribute to good air quality as an ecosystem service. The extent to which green vegetation captures fine dust is still subject to discussion. It is therefore still unclear whether and where green elements can be used specifically for the control of particulate matter in the Netherlands. There seem to be opportunities, but first there needs to be more clarity about the extent and effect of the action of the capture by vegetation. Who is this important to? Air quality is important for the health of all residents of the Netherlands. The map can support policy makers and spatial planners in the design of the green space, construction of infrastructure and green elements for improving air quality. Given the uncertainty in the operation, further research is always needed when using the card for applications at concrete locations.
