Dataset description

This table contains data on crimes registered by the police. In addition to the absolute number of crimes, the table also shows the number of crimes per 1000 inhabitants in the municipality or region concerned. In addition, the table shows the number of offences that have been clarified and the number of suspects registered in these crimes. The figures are broken down by municipality of perpetrators, regional unit, type of crime and year of reporting. Since July 2018, it is no longer possible for the police to record several offences related to each other (coupling) in a single registration. An example of this is a street grabbing using a firearm (weapon possession). If multiple offences occur in one registration, only the most serious offence was counted before July 2018. As a result of this adjustment, a number of offences, such as arms trafficking and domestic peace violations, show an increase compared to 2017. This increase is therefore particularly visible in the last 6 months of 2018. This adjustment has a limited impact on the total number of crimes. For 2018, this leads to an increase of around 0.5 %. Since 30 April 2020, it is possible to report WhatsApp fraud (friend-in-emergency fraud) via the internet. This has been widely used. In the months of May to December 2020, around 20,000 reports of WhatsApp fraud were made. However, these declarations are not all registered as forgery in writing, but a part is (incorrectly) registered as a breach of computer peace. Data are available from 2010 onwards. Status of the figures: The figures for the years 2010-2019 are definitive. The figures for 2020 and 2021 are provisional. Changes as of March 2022: The figures for 2019 and 2020 have been renewed. The 2019 figures have become definitive. The figures for 2021 are new. The underlying coding (Municipality; No breakdown) of the classification of Regions used in this table has been adjusted. This is now in line with the standard encodings established by the CBS. The structure and data of the table have not been adjusted. When will there be new figures? The provisional figures for 2022 will be published in March 2023.
