Dataset description

This table contains data on the origin and destination of resources for research and development (R & D) carried out by companies and institutions based in the Netherlands. At the disposal of the funds, the various domestic exporters are distinguished from R & D (businesses, institutions and higher education). In addition, abroad is also the destination of R & D money distinguished. The allocation of resources of the companies and institutions established in the Netherlands ultimately adds up to the national expenditure on R & D (in terms of the Frascati manual: Gross National Expenditure on R & D (Gnerd) At the origin of R & D funds, the main domestic clients are distinguished, including the national government as a more general lender for carrying out R & D. The origin of resources ultimately adds up to R & D expenditure for R & D carried out with own staff. in the Netherlands (in terms of the Frascati manual: Gross domestic expenditure on R & D (GERD) The difference between the R & D expenditure of companies and institutions based in the Netherlands on R & D carried out with its own staff and the actual national expenditure on R & D is the balance of the funds received from abroad for the performance of R & D and the funds provided to abroad for the execution of R & D. For example: in 1999 total R & D expenditure on R & D in the Netherlands amounted to EUR 7646 million (GERD). The funds for this amount amounted to EUR 844 million from abroad. However, companies and institutions based in the Netherlands also spent EUR 431 million R & D abroad in 1999. The total national expenditure on R & D in 1999 was therefore 7646-844+ 431 = EUR 7234 million (gnerd). Data available from: 1999 The data is compiled once every two years (for the odd years). Status of the figures: The figures are final. When are new figures coming? This table was discontinued as of 28-5-2013 and continued as "Research and development; financing expenditure by sector of implementation”. See also paragraph 3.
