Dataset description

This table contains data on R & D staff and expenditure on own research and development activities. The figures are given for the higher education institutions sector. The R & D is carried out with its own staff in the Netherlands. Outsourced R & D is not included in this table. This concerns: — expenditure incurred on behalf of the R & D with its own staff; — the R & D staff, both in numbers of employed persons and in numbers of working years. The data relate to: — publicly funded universities; — the University Medical Centres (UMCs) in which the Medical Faculty of the associated university is (partly) located; — Higher Vocational Education (HBO). As of reporting year 2011, Dutch R & D figures have changed significantly compared to previous years. Important reasons for changing the Dutch R & D figures are: — A new version of the Eurostat Regulation from the reporting year 2011. — Changes in the CBS business register. The following changes have been made: — Expanding the R & D definition. — Changes in the processing of the R & D research. — Adding the R & D expenses of companies with fewer than 10 employees. — Reducing the total benefits of higher education institutions as a basis for R & D expenditures. Data available from: 1999 Status of the figures: The figures until 2018 are final. Changes as of 12 May 2021: The final figures for 2018 and the provisional figures for 2019 have been added. When are new figures coming? Final figures for 2019 will be published in May 2022.
