Dataset description

This grid file (with cell size 25x25 m) provides information on the risk of subsurface compaction in relation to land use in five classes for the whole of the Netherlands. A healthy soil consists of solid components and sufficient pores. These pores are important for the transport of air and water through the soil and for plant roots. In soil compaction, for example due to too high wheel loads, the pore volume decreases. In case of too strong soil compaction, the permeability and moisture storage capacity of the soil will decrease. This can lead to flooding (e.g. pudding) and superficial flow, peak load at polder ground and inundation of low soils. There is also a higher risk of flushing of nutrients and plant protection products to surface water. A compacted soil is not or difficult to root, which reduces the crop yield.
