Dataset description

This table provides data on young people aged 12 to 25 who have been registered or apprehended as suspects of a crime recorded in the reporting year, distinguishing by common crime groups, gender, age and origin grouping. The table shows the number of suspects of crime in absolute and relative figures. The relative figure is calculated per 10 000 persons in the selected population. Personal data of persons who do not appear in the Municipal Basic Administration (GBA) are often missing. These persons are included in the absolute figures, but not in the relative. As the number of suspects per type of crime is presented per reporting year, the number of suspects per type of crime aggregates to more than the total number of unique suspects. A person who has been registered or apprehended more than once within a reporting year is counted only once in the total number of suspects. In addition, he is counted once in the relevant main group of offences for each offence he is suspected of. Example: a suspect of 10 burglaries and 2 violent offences is counted 1 times in Total number of suspects, 1 times in Power Offences and 1x in Violence Crimes. In order to show how young people are doing in the Netherlands, more than 70 topics are described in the National Youth Monitor in addition to this topic. The topics are referred to as indicators. Data on registered suspects will be available from 2005. The data on detained suspects are available from 2000 onwards. Status of the figures: For registered suspects, the figures are final until 2019, further provisional for 2020 and provisional for 2021. (Further) preliminary figures give an underestimation of the final number of suspects. The provisional number of suspects in the most recent year is a few percent lower than the final number. For suspects arrested, the figures are definitive until 2014; more up-to-date figures will no longer be available. Changes as of 8 April 2022: Figures on the number of suspects registered for the year 2021 have been added. The figures for the number of suspects registered for the years 2019 and 2020 have been adjusted by compliance with information. When will there be new figures? New figures on registered suspects will be available in the first quarter of 2023. More up-to-date figures on suspects detained will no longer be available.
