Dataset description

The Safety Monitor (VM) is a biennial population survey on safety, liveability and victimisation. Attention is also paid to nuisances in the neighbourhood, disrespectful behaviour, prevention measures, the functioning of the police and the municipal security policy. This provides clear data on the (experience of) security at both national, regional and (lower) local level. This table focuses on the perception of (in)security by the citizen. It is then about the safety experience in their own neighbourhood, in their own place of residence, and in general. The issue of disrespectful behaviour is also discussed. The data are presented for the Netherlands as a whole, the divisions and provinces, as well as for regional police units, police districts, police base teams and for all municipalities with more than 70 000 inhabitants. Among these municipalities with more than 70 000 inhabitants, the figures from the G4 and G32 urban networks and the other municipalities which do not belong to these urban networks are also included. The Safety Monitor is a survey based on a sample. This means that the figures shown are estimates, for which confidence margins apply. These margins are also shown in the table. The figures refer to persons aged 15 or over, unless otherwise stated. The survey was carried out in August-November. Due to changes in the questions and the research design, the results of the Safety Monitor (VM) are not simply comparable with those of previous victim surveys, such as the Integrated Safety Monitor (IVM; 2008-2011) and the Rijk Safety Monitor (VMR; 2005-2008). For more information see section 4. Sources and Methods included survey description Security Monitor from 2012. Data available from 2012 to 2019 Status of the figures: The figures in this table are definitive. When will there be new figures? No longer applicable. This table is followed by the table 'Social security; region’. See paragraph 3.
