The still visible castle grounds in the province are of great importance to the cultural history of South Holland. They also often form — as with their green character — rest spaces in the urban area. To ensure that this unique cultural heritage is not lost, the province has set up a so-called ‘castle biotope’.
The castle biotope consists of:
— the castle/castle site itself, in the form of ruins, wall remnants, one or more outbuildings, canal terrain, etc.
— the field of view, the space needed to experience the castle/castle grounds
— the basic structure to which the castle/castle site is linked: watercourse, road, or both
— the possible coupling and any open space between the castle location and the basic structure (e.g. avenue, lawn)
— the main features of the original landscape context
— the remnants of any outdoor period, so spatially related to the castle location
Global castle biotopes, established by PS as part of the Vision on Zuid-Holland — Space Regulation. This stock concerns the outer boundary of the biotopes and has descriptive attributes of the biotope.
