Dataset description

This map shows the actual production of energy from forest biomass for each cell. This is a model-based approach based on the currently increased wood volumes, the energy content of wood and the assumption that only crown and branch wood is used for energy production and this with a harvest loss of 30 %. The ratio of crown and branch wood and energy wood comes from Flemish studies (Van Kerckvoorde & Van Reeth 2014, Van de Walle et al. 2005). The production of energy from forest biomass is expressed in gigajoules per hectare per year. Up-to-date timber volumes are derived from the “Actual Wood Production” map of the Atlas Natural Capital. The production of energy from forest biomass is expressed in gigajoules per hectare per year. The map was produced for the Atlas Natural Capital by knowledge institutes RIVM and VITO (Belgium).
