Dataset description

Data on groundwater level research (Groundwaterlevel data in English) are stored in the basic subsurface registration (BRO). The groundwater status survey contains the measurements of the variation in the state of groundwater that is accessed in a well known groundwater monitoring well with a certain tube. With monitoring of the groundwater has been taking place for a long time, at many locations in our country. With this information, it is possible to identify characteristic characteristics of groundwater movement, recognise spatial patterns and analyse trend changes. Important characteristics are, for example, the highest and last groundwater levels expected in a given area due to the annual seasonal pattern. This knowledge is important not only for agriculture and nature development, but also for the design of new residential areas and infrastructure. The measurement data provide insight into the groundwater’s response to changes such as the reduction of a polder level, or groundwater abstraction. On the basis of this information, forecasts can be made on the evolution of the groundwater level in the future. The longer the time series are, the more accurate the predictions are about the long-term behaviour of groundwater. One of today’s major challenges is to predict the impact of climate change on the groundwater system. Guidelines for a sustainable policy and management of our groundwater systems are being developed both nationally and internationally.
