This file contains the pingoruits located in the Zuidelijk Westerkwartier, Groningen province.
Characteristic of the Southern Westerkwartier are the pingoruines. Pingorguins are earthly valuable areas and are created by a natural process during the last ice age, the Weichselien. Torment water could then reach the surface locally through the permanently frozen surface (permafrost) and froze there. Due to freezing water expansion, ice mounds were created, with the substrate pressed upwards. During melting, the pressed ground slid to the edges. After meltdown, deep, round holes filled with water remained with a ring roller. The pingoruines Bolmeer and Ronde Lake south of the Jonkersvaart are nice examples of this.
The province of Groningen wants to prevent the pingoruines from losing their value due to, among other things, new cultivation and plantations, deep ploughing, levelling and discharging land. The 2016 Provincial Environment Ordinance states that municipalities must maintain the pingoruines through their zoning plans. This dataset is partly included in the Provincial Environmental Vision 2016-2020. Furthermore, the Provincial Regulation 2016 lays down rules to protect these pingoruines.
