Dataset description

The soil storage map shows how much millimetres of water can be stored in the soil (water storage). The map was commissioned by the province of Zuid-Holland on the basis of the best available source data at that time. The map was delivered in September 2019 and has a resolution of 0.5 meters. There are two variants. Based on the KNMI current scenario and a scenario based on the KNMI Warm-Hoog (WH2050). This is based on: 1) the height of the ground level (AHN3) 2) Medium Top Groundwater Level (GHG) 3) the bottom type-card BOFEK2012 4) CAPSIM table showing per bottom type how much millimetre of water can be stored vertically. The soil recovery maps are risk and opportunity cards in one. During risk and opportunity dialogues for climate adaptation, the maps show where possible high groundwater levels occur in (long-term) precipitation. At the same time, the map shows opportunities for infiltration of rainwater after heavy rainfall, to prevent flooding and create a buffer for dry periods. Options to apply the cards are: — Aggravating risks and opportunities of the groundwater situation in an area during risk dialogues with area partners (municipalities, environmental services, water boards, farmers). The map gives a global view, which is enough to have the conversation and then look for the substantive depth. — Researching opportunities to hold water in areas with a lot of soil salvage for longer, to compensate for dry periods. — Providing an image of the groundwater situation in the context of urban extensions, and whether this groundwater situation fits the intended functions (not too wet, not too dry). Note: the map is best used at regional (water system) level. In urban areas, groundwater levels can fluctuate greatly due to objects in the subsoil and by changing soil structure. At the level of detail, the map can also give a different view from the actual situation because no local measurement data has been included in the National Water Model. The card is therefore less suitable for use at ditch, street or house level. However, the map gives an indication in which areas there is a lot of storage space in the bottom, and where there are therefore possibilities to store water (temporarily), such as with wadis and lots of greenery.
