Dataset description

In this search service you can retrieve information about valid scientific names according to current international standards (International Code of Botanical Nomenclature, International Code of Zoological Nomenclature), synonyms and recommended Norwegian names in Bokmål and Nynorsk. You can also see where in the hierarchical kinship tree species or group belong. The search service does not provide a complete overview of all scientific and Norwegian names of species and organism groups. Of the main groups that are partially missing are, for example, protozoa, several fungal orders, mites, nettles, bacteria and viruses. The systematic hierarchy down to order level is basically derived from the Catalogue of Life. It is a goal that the service will eventually contain the names of all known species in Norway and species in nearby geographical areas that over time can be expected to be found in Norway. The database also contains the names of many species that do not exist in Norway. As of today, it is not visible in the access solution which names only apply to species that exist in Norway, but such information can be retrieved by exporting data lists or searching on the species portal. We are constantly working to import a larger scope of synonymous names (scientific and Norwegian). The database contains a large reference material for literature for names and name changes that do not appear today but will be made available in a later version of the database. The name base is operated by the Artsdatabanken in cooperation with GBIF-Norway. The names have been collected, quality-assured and facilitated by a number of naming committees from scientific institutions in Norway. As a superstructure for the committees, a naming council has been established to ensure a uniform implementation of the professional work. The naming committees also have good advisory support in the Language Council in the work with Norwegian names.
